Before I developed BodyPlan, I asked myself the same question.

Are they a personal trainer….NO… but they can work with them.

Are they a physiotherapist…NO…but they can work with them.

An accredited exercise physiologist (EP) is an Allied Health professional who specialises in the benefits of exercise and to help patients get fitter for all around good health.  With 4 years university training and ongoing accreditation requirements, EPs are able to treat patients with medical conditions through exercise prescription and rehabilitation plans.

Put simply, I can train with our EP and know I am training safely and efficiently.  After years of training my husband and I wished we had discovered an EP sooner.  We are busy, hardworking people with a family who want to enjoy being young with our child, but we are time poor.  Maximising our training program with our other commitments was essential.  Our EP prescribed training programs are targeted to maximise our individual requirements in a flexible way that meets our demanding lifestyle.

An EP understands the body both mentally and physically and they understand how to get results.   More specifically they understand the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and endocrine systems and how to prescribe programs for health, fitness, sports performance and rehabilitation.

An EP is qualified to train elite athletes right through to helping people to change their body composition for clinical health rehabilitation and weight management.  They are also qualified to treat medical conditions such as obesity, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, depression, asthma and cardiovascular diseases, as well as many other conditions.

EPs can also work in the sports medicine research area or in the field of professional sport.  They can also work side by side with physiotherapists, occupational therapists and podiatrists.

All exercise physiologists in Australia must be accredited with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).
